The Ballon d’Or is an annual football award that recognizes the best male and female (which was added just recently) player of the year. It was created in 1956 by the French magazine France Football, and was originally given only to European players. In 1995, it was opened to all players who played in Europe, and in 2007, it became a global prize. From 2010 to 2015, it was merged with the FIFA World Player of the Year award and called the FIFA Ballon d’Or. In 2016, the two awards got separated again, and the original name was restored. The current holder of the Ballon d’Or is Lionel Messi, who won his eighth award in 2023. He is also the player with the most awards,

George Weah is the first ever African to win this award and since him no African player has ever won the d'or, The recent African player who made it to the podium was Sadio Mané in 2022, he was second in that year's ceremony.
