Elon Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur, announced that long-form videos will soon be accessible on smart televisions. This revelation came after Fortune magazine reported that the social network X is planning to launch a TV app for Amazon and Samsung users next week.
The platform had previously introduced an early version of video and audio calling for select users in October, aligning with Musk’s vision to transform it into a super app offering a range of services from messaging to peer-to-peer payments.
“Coming soon,” Musk responded briefly on X to a user’s post regarding the platform’s long-form video accessibility on smart TVs. Fortune earlier speculated that the app might resemble Google’s YouTube TV app and suggested that Musk is determined to compete with YouTube in the video streaming space.
X has not yet provided further details on the TV app in response to a Reuters request for clarification.
In its endeavor to become a “video-first platform,” X has been forming partnerships with notable figures such as former Fox commentator Tucker Carlson and former CNN anchor Don Lemon. Despite facing challenges in retaining advertisers since Musk’s acquisition in 2022, the platform announced last month its plans to allow advertisers to run video ads alongside content from certain creators.
