The race to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 in Morocco has concluded, and the final list of qualified teams has been revealed. The tournament, one of the most anticipated events in African football, will host 24 teams ready to compete for the continent’s prestigious title.
Below is a breakdown of qualified Nations.
Group A: Comoros led with 12 points, narrowly beating Tunisia (10 points) to the top spot.
Group B: Morocco, the hosts, dominated with a perfect 18 points, while Gabon secured qualification with 10 points.
Group C: Egypt, as expected, topped with 14 points, followed by Botswana (8 points).
Group D: Nigeria claimed the lead with 11 points, edging out Benin on 8 points. However, Benin edged out Rwanda to secure qualification, thanks to a superior goal difference, despite both teams finishing with the same points.
Group E: Algeria showcased strength with 16 points, and Equatorial Guinea followed with 8.
Group F: Angola emerged on top with 14 points, while Sudan clinched second place with 8.
Group G: Zambia narrowly outpaced defending champions Ivory Coast, earning 13 points compared to the latter’s 12.
Group H: DR Congo finished first with 12 points, closely followed by Tanzania on 10.
Group I: Mali shone with 14 points, and Mozambique secured their spot with 9 points.
Group J: Cameroon led with 14 points, while Zimbabwe surprised many with 11 points to qualify.
Group K: South Africa triumphed with 14 points, followed by Uganda’s strong 13-point performance.
Group L: Senegal dominated with 16 points, and Burkina Faso came in second with 10.
One of the most startling outcomes of the qualifiers is the absence of Ghana, a traditional powerhouse in African football. The Black Stars, who have consistently qualified and performed well in past tournaments, failed to make it this time, signaling a major disappointment for fans and analysts alike. This marks the first time in 20 years that the four time winners have failed to qualify.
The team secured 3 draws and 3 losses; finishing 4th with 3 points in group F.
