Dress to fit the occasion
Your appearance at the table, formal or any other setting, will speak volumes about you. It is important to know the place the event and the time. When attending formal events or dining in upscale restaurants, it is important to dress appropriately. Choose an outfit that is modest, elegant, and comfortable to wear. Avoid wearing revealing or inappropriate clothing that may draw unwanted attention.
Wait for the host to be seated
When entering a dining room, wait for the host to be seated before taking your seat. If you are the host, guide your guests to their seats and take your seat last.
Napkin placement
Once seated, place your napkin on your lap with the fold facing toward you. Use your napkin to wipe your mouth discreetly and avoid using it as a tissue. The napkin on your lap is to prevent any stain from affecting your outfit, it saves you from any embarrassment.

Start with the cutlery farthest from your plate and work your way inwards as each course is served. When finished with a course, place your cutlery on your plate diagonally with the handles at 4 o’clock. This position signifies, ‘’You want the plate to be taken away’’.
Eating etiquette
When eating, do not put chunks of the food in your mouth; take small bites and chew with your mouth closed. Avoid talking with food in your mouth or reaching across the table for items. Use utensils to cut your food into bite-sized pieces and avoid using your hands unless it is appropriate.
Drinking etiquette
Hold your glass by the stem or base when drinking and avoid touching the rim with your lips. Take small sips and avoid gulping or slurping.
Conversation etiquette
Engage in polite conversation with those around you, but avoid discussing sensitive topics such as politics or religion. Listen attentively and avoid interrupting others while they are speaking. Leave pauses in between your talks, do not talk only about yourself without any breaks. It leaves a boring impression on you.
