Felix Agyeman-Duah, known by his stage name Theboyshocka, is an emerging artist who is ready to take the Ghanaian music scene by storm. At 25 years old, this talented musician hails from Konongo in the Ashanti Region and holds a degree from the University of Ghana, Legon, where he studied Political Science, Linguistics, and Chinese. Despite the challenges he has faced, including the loss of both parents, Theboyshocka's journey is one of resilience and determination.
Theboyshocka’s deep connection with music blossomed after the passing of his mother, Dorcas Ofori Mensah. "Music became my escape, my sanctuary," he explains. It was during this challenging time that he began writing his own songs, realising that he was born to be a musician. His childhood was marked by adversity, but instead of breaking him, those experiences shaped him into a stronger individual. "I knew I couldn't fail because of the strength I gained from those days," he shared.
His creative process often amazes him, as he feels he can transform nothing into a masterpiece. He views this ability as a gift from God and remains open to learning, constantly striving to improve his craft.
Authenticity is at the core of Theboyshocka's music. He emphasizes the importance of staying true to oneself, free from outside influences. "I just do me all the time," he says, highlighting that genuine self-expression is vital to his artistry.
Theboyshocka draws inspiration from a range of musicians, including Shatta Wale, EL, Simi, Peruzzi, Davido, and Vybz Kartel. He loves every genre of music, which allows him to easily connect with different vibes. His creative process begins with falling in love with an instrumental, followed by a deep study of the beat patterns before he starts flowing. His collaboration with his producer, 3nity, is instrumental in bringing his songs to life.
Theboyshocka acknowledges that the music industry can be tough for emerging artists. "You must strive hard to create a path for yourself," he notes. He draws motivation from Shatta Wale’s story, who faced a significant setback but came back stronger after a long hiatus. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Theboyshocka took a break from music to reevaluate his goals, learning about the industry and how to remain relevant.
This period was crucial for him as he hustled on the streets of Accra to build a solid foundation before pursuing his dreams again. "This year, 2024, is when I decided to rebrand and start doing music again," he states, filled with renewed ambition.
Looking ahead, Theboyshocka has both short-term and long-term goals. In the immediate future, he aims to top Ghana’s charts and collaborate with some of the best artists in both Ghana and Nigeria. His long-term vision is to leave a lasting impact on the world and perform on international stages.
He recognizes the internet as a powerful tool for connecting with people and promoting himself. "In music, you have to keep trying until you get that hit song or viral track," he explains, committed to serving and entertaining his fans in the meantime.
Theboyshocka understands the importance of community in his music journey. "To be loved and accepted as a top artist, you need to connect with your people," he says. He believes that serving the community is essential to reaching the top.
Fans of Theboyshocka can look forward to his upcoming EP, "TIME EP," which promises to tell his life story through songs created at various stages of his life. "I've already started promoting it, and it's going to shock Ghana," he shares with excitement.
As he continues to carve out his space in the music industry, Theboyshocka encourages his fans to stay true to themselves and believe in their abilities. With his determination and passion, there's no doubt that this rising star is on the path to greatness. Keep an eye on Theboyshocka; his journey is just beginning.
